WORKPLACE WELLNESS PROGRAM

Employee Stress Statistics

  • 57% of U.S. workers reported feeling daily stress, up by eight percentage points from the prior year. (Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace: 2021 Report)
  • 88.1% of employees reported concerns with their stress levels over the past year. (Pathways’ Mind at Work: A Report on Employee Mental Health)
  • 94% of workers report feeling stress at work, and almost a third describe their stress level as high to unusually high (American Institute of Stress).
  • Three-fourths of employees believe the worker has more on-the-job stress than a generation ago. (NIOSH)
  • 16% of employees have quit a job because of stress. (Korn Ferry)
  • Younger Americans between the ages of 15 and 49 are among the most stressed, worried, and angry in the U.S. (Gallup)
  • Five hundred fifty million workdays are lost each year due to stress. (American Psychological Association)
  • Workplace stress has a $300 billion annual price tag in the US alone. (SelectSoftwareReviews)

According to the CDC:

Poor mental health and stress can negatively affect employee:

  • Job performance and productivity.
  • Engagement with one’s work.
  • Communication with coworkers.
  • Physical capability and daily functioning.

Mental illnesses such as depression are associated with higher rates of disability and unemployment. Poor mental health and stress can negatively affect employee job performance and productivity, engagement with one’s work, communication with coworkers, physical capability and daily functioning.

Depression interferes with a person’s ability to complete physical job tasks about 20% of the time and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time.

Employers can reduce health care costs for their businesses and employees by addressing mental health issues in the workplace. Workplace wellness programs can identify those at risk and connect them to treatment and put in place supports to help people reduce and manage stress.

Potential measurable effects of enhanced mental health supports include fewer missed workdays and increased return to work rates among employees surveyed.

The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) is a simple and powerful process for creating the life and wellness you want. It is an intervention that was developed by people who had been dealing with a variety of psychiatric symptoms and who were working hard to feel better and get on with their lives. WRAP is an evidence-based practice in the field of mental health recovery and is widely used around the world primarily by and for people with mental illnesses of varying severity. wellnessrecoveryactionplan.com

In 2010, WRAP® was recognized by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as an evidence-based practice and listed in the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (http://nrepp.samhsa.gov). Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) released the results of a rigorous study that demonstrated significantly positive behavioral health outcomes for individuals with severe and persistent mental health challenges who participated in peer-led WRAP® groups.

WHAM will be implemented further down the line, in our future sessions. This is proven to be very effective in helping people to improve their life of living with mental illness and their health as a whole. Did you know that not getting the proper help when living with a mental illness, can cause other physical health issues? This is why many employers are looking to implement wellness programs.

Whole Health Action Management (WHAM) is an approach for enhancing physical health of people with mental health and substance use challenges. It is especially useful for people with chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other medical conditions. (Which can be brought on from mental health issues, if not successfully treated.)

Whole Health Action Management- teaches skills to better self-manage chronic physical health conditions, and mental illnesses and addictions — known as “behavioral health” — to achieve whole health. In the context of WHAM training, whole health is defined as having a healthy mind and body. Info from the National Library of Medicine

Some people may not have experienced trauma; therefore, this would not apply to those individuals. However, many people have, and this support will be available to them. As a survivor, I can identify with you and am able to support you and help you reach your goals of healing and recovery.

Trauma-informed care is defined as practices that promote a culture of safety, empowerment, and healing. It is care in which mental healthcare providers engage with a client in a manner that allows for implementation of an effective treatment process without retraumatization. Trauma-informed care requires understanding that the trauma people experience in the past can negatively impact their current life. The approach acknowledges that health care organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a patient’s life situation — past and present — in order to provide effective health care services with a healing orientation. health.harvard.edu & traumainformedcare.chcs.org
